Mechanical design of V-belt transmission structure

The cross-section of a standard V-belt consists of a top rubber (tensile layer), a tensile member, a bottom rubber (compression layer), and a cover layer (as shown in Figure 7-4). When the belt is wrapped around the pulley, the top rubber is stretched and elongated, hence it is called the tensile layer; the bottom rubber is shortened by pressure, hence it is called the compression layer. The cover layer is made of rubber canvas to protect the V-belt; the tension layer and compression layer are both made of rubber; the tensile member is divided into two types: fabric core structure (Figure 7-4 (a)) and cord core structure (Figure 7-4 (b)). V-belts with a fabric core structure are easy to manufacture and have good tensile strength, while V-belts with a cord core structure have good flexibility and high bending strength, and are suitable for applications with small pulley diameters and high rotational speeds. Narrow V-belts (Figure 7-4 (c)) are a new type of V-belt that uses polyester and other synthetic fibers as the reinforcing layer. Compared with ordinary V-belts, when the height h is the same, the top width b of the narrow V-belt can be reduced by about 1/3, its top is arched, and the side (working surface) is concave, so its load-carrying capacity is significantly higher than that of ordinary V-belts, suitable for transmitting high power and requiring a compact structure.
